Along the Apennines there is a magical place, we are in Abruzzo and we are talking about the Gran Sasso d’Italia National Park. An unmissable destination for every motorbike tourist, the Gran Sasso offers its visitors a fantastic mix of curves, panoramas and villages to visit that are truly one of a kind.

It is good to remember, before leaving for this location, that we will always be above 1000 meters of altitude, so let's make sure of the weather and road conditions, especially in winter, given the area predisposed to abundant snowfalls.

There are many points of interest in this area, which can be visited in a day, a weekend, but given the proximity to Umbria and Marche, you can create a real Moto Tour even for more than a week.

A day to discover the Gran Sasso could start from Assergi, easily reachable from the motorway, and then head to Fonte Cerreto, the starting point of the cable car that leads to Campo Imperatore.
Taking the Ss17Bis, you can see a sudden change in the landscape, reaching the famous plateau, which really leaves you speechless.
After about 17 km we will find the left turn to reach Campo Imperatore, an unmissable destination, at an altitude of 2150m.

This town is famous for its astronomical observatory and for the hotel, where Benito Mussolini was imprisoned during the Second World War, before being freed by Nazi paratroopers.
Returning to the Ss17Bis, we proceed towards the Ristoro Mucciante, a real institution of the place, a destination for every motorcyclist, famous for the possibility of tasting typical local foods such as kebabs and other delicacies.

We cross the Capo La Serra pass to visit in succession 3 villages of historical interest such as Castel Del Monte, Calascio (with its fortress) and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, which are counted among the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Do not miss the climb to the Castle of Rocca Calascio, which from the top of its 1460 meters dominates the surrounding area at 360 degrees.

Once we arrive in Santo Stefano di Sessanio we could decide how best to continue, return to the plateau through the road that passes through Lake Racollo, or passing through L'Aquila, go up towards Passo delle Capannelle (a real must for centaurs) and arrive at Lake Campotosto, the second largest artificial lake in Europe.
